Will my v7 or v8 encoder work with a v9 server?

Updated over a month ago

Introduction

EdgeVis Server v9 introduces new backwards compatibility and licensing rules, and this article outlines how this operates in practice.

Will my v7 encoder work with a v9 server?

Your v7 encoder will not connect to a v9 server.

What should I do?

Check your product model number against the table above:

  • If your product is in the left v7 column, you will need to set up a separate v8 EdgeVis Server to host these devices, as there are no firmware updates that will allow you to make these devices compatible.

  • If your product is in the right v8 column, you can upgrade your encoder to a later v8 version that will be compatible with a v9 server. You must perform this upgrade BEFORE updating your server to v9! If you don't you'll need to perform the upgrade using the encoder's local web interface.

What will happen to those devices on my v9 server?

If you upgrade your server from v8 to v9, any existing v7 encoder accounts will show that they are incompatible with your server, and your encoder will fail to connect:

If you log into your encoder's web configuration interface, it will show that your encoder's server is incompatible:

If you create a new encoder account on your v9 server, and attempt to connect a v7 encoder, it will fail to connect and will always show that the encoder is offline:

Will my v8 encoder work with a v9 server?

v8 encoders will always be able to connect to a v9 EdgeVis Server. How the system operates depends on your encoder model:

EdgeVis hardware encoders and BW600

All v8 hardware encoders will automatically be granted a permanent EdgeVis Legacy licence that will allow you to use that encoder forever. You do not need to obtain a licence from Digital Barriers to use this device on a new or upgraded server.

This licence will enable you to use the maximum number of cameras on your encoders, with all analytics capabilities. You no longer have to assign a licence to new v8 encoder accounts that you create - all licence allocation happens automatically.

EdgeVis Android mobile encoders

By default, EdgeVis Android mobile encoders require an additional setup step, and will not be granted a licence on a freshly installed/upgraded server before they are operational.

  1. If you have not already done so, contact Digital Barriers, who will create a Licensing Pool for you that enables Android mobile encoder (how do I request a licence pool?).

  2. You must authenticate your server to access the new licence pool.

Users who have upgraded their servers from v8 to v9 will see a warning message if the server has detected that you have mobile encoders that will operate until you perform the above steps.

I've already paid for v8 mobile licences - do I have to buy another licence?

No, there is no additional licensing cost for using your v8 mobile encoders. This is simply transferring your existing right to use v8 mobile encoders into our v9 licensing system.

This allows Digital Barriers to check who has previously purchased mobile encoder licences, and ensure that only they can download and utilise EdgeVis Mobile Encoder from the Play Store.

Once you have performed the above, your v8 mobile encoders will operate the same way as hardware encoders. Your mobile encoders will automatically be granted a permanent EdgeVis Legacy licence that will allow you to use that encoder forever, and will allow you to use recording and external cameras features.

You no longer have to assign a licence to new v8 encoder accounts that you create - all licence allocation happens automatically.
