How do I configure my encoder's server login details?
How do I configure my encoder's server login details?
Updated over a week ago

Introduction

Your encoder by default does not know where it should connect to and requires you to supply the address of your EdgeVis Server and a set of valid login details that will allow your encoder to connect to your server.

This step is normally performed as part of setting up an encoder - at this point, your encoder must have its comms methods configured and working.

Do you have the encoder account details?

Before the encoder can be connected to an EdgeVis Server, it will require an encoder account be created on EdgeVis Server (an administrator typically undertakes this step).

If you don't have account details, the details of encoder account management are covered in the EdgeVis Server Quick Start Guide.

Configure the server settings

From the encoder's web set up interface select the Server settings item from the home page:

The Server page will then show the current server connection status and configured settings (on a new encoder this will show that no settings have been configured):

To edit the server settings use the Change server settings menu item:

In most situations, you should enter the following:

  • Server address: enter the IP Address or Domain Name of your EdgeVis Server

  • Encoder name: enter the name of the encoder's account (not this is case sensitive)

  • Encoder password: enter the encoder account's password

  • Connection method: set this to Encryped (Online verification) - refer to Alternative connection methods if you are using an R series encoder or a server that doesn't support encryption. - ZAP insert link to encryption page.

Once entered you should use the Connect to server button to continue. Your encoder will now try to validate the settings you enter. You will likely be asked to confirm your server's fingerprint:

This fingerprint is used to confirm that your encoder is talking to the correct server (and not a rogue server impersonating your server). To obtain your server's fingerprint, log into your EdgeVis Server web interface, go to your encoder's domain and view your encoders - there is an Encryption details link that you use to obtain your server's fingerprint.

ZAP - insert link to encryption fingerprints

If successful your Server status page should now show the encoder connected to your server:

Otherwise, you may see an error message including:

  • Connection failed

    • Have you entered the server address correctly?

    • Have you accidentally used the internal IP address for your server?

    • Are you sure your server's firewall ports are opened?

    • Are you sure the appropriate ports are forwarded to your server?

  • Authentication failed

    • Have you entered the encoder name/password correctly?

    • Have you checked the encoder account exists on your server?

    • Have you accidentally used a user account instead of an encoder account?

  • Encryption failed

    • Did you upload an invalid encryption pack?

    • Has your server been reinstalled and your server fingerprint has changed?

  • Encoder unlicensed

    • Did you allocate the appropriate licences when creating the account? ZAP

If this happens try reviewing the possible causes above to try and resolve the issue.

Once complete your encoder should now be online and, if not already configured, move onto adding your cameras.
