This document describes how to add a bandwidth rule to a Dock Controller using VideoVault.

Updated over 5 months ago

Overview

When the network bandwidth at a camera site is limited, it may not be desirable to utilise all the available bandwidth for uploading recordings. In these cases, a bandwidth rule can be created that will limit the Dock Controller to offloading only at certain times or at a maximum offload rate. A bandwidth rule can also be shared across a group of Dock Controllers at the same site to ensure that the rate limiting applies to all offloads.

The instructions in this article apply to VideoVault version 14 or higher.

How to create a bandwidth rule

  1. In the VideoVault web page, navigate to the Admin tab.

  2. Select the Connectivity pane:

  5. Enter a name for the bandwidth rule.

  6. Choose optional settings:

    1. Shared bandwidth group: If there are multiple Dock Controllers at the same site that share the same upload connection, then a shared bandwidth group can be used across the Dock Controllers. This will treat the bandwidth limit as a total across all Dock Controllers.

    2. Slow connection: If the upload connection is slow or unreliable then enabling this setting will cause the Dock Controller to continually retry failed uploads instead of stopping when the maximum retry limit is reached.

  7. Select Add Rule. Then select the days and times that the rule will apply. Outside of the specified times, no restriction will apply.

  8. Set a bandwidth limit in kbit/s. The recommended maximum is 200,000 kbit/s (200Mbit/s).

  9. Additional rules can be added by selecting Add Rule for each additional rule.

  10. Select Create bandwidth rule to save the changes.
