What's new in EdgeVis v9.1?

Updated this week

Introduction

This version of EdgeVis introduces several big features to all of our customers.

Introducing EdgeVis EVVR Containers

Digital Barriers introduced a limited availability release of EVVR Containers in v9.0 that allowed partners to prepare for a whole new mechanism to deliver to users. EVVR Containers allows users to host EdgeVis Containers on standard PC hardware (like Intel/AMD PCs), mini PCs (like the Raspberry PI 5), and some sophisticated routers.

We are now pleased to offer this capability to all our customers:

If you are interested in exploring the use of EVVR Containers, please contact your Digital Barriers sales representative.

EVVR Container Improvements

The v9.1 release also includes several improvements over v9.0 EVVR Containers:

  • H.264 hardware acceleration (where available)

Your container will now automatically utilise any Intel or AMD hardware acceleration for decoding incoming H.264 camera video. This will reduce the CPU usage of your containers by as much as 50% in some scenarios!

More info: H.264 hardware acceleration in EVVR Containers

  • Support for ONVIF Profile S/T alarm events

Your containers can utilise the alarm events and triggers that are presented by most IP cameras. These events can include video motion detection, object detection, audio detection and physical relays. These events will not appear automatically within EdgeVis Central Alarm Management when building alarm rules.

More info: Using ONVIF alarms with Central Alarm Management

  • Improved camera configuration while adding cameras

You can now enable audio on your camera, and automatically switch the audio codec to one compatible with your encoder (AAC, or G711 if not available):

  • Boost mode for remote recordings download

In conjunction with EdgeVis Client for Windows v9.1 users can now temporarily override the stated bandwidth limits to download recordings from their container as quickly as possible (up to 20 Mbps, connection permitting).

More info: How do I download recordings from my encoder?

  • Custom permissions of files stored outside of containers

Version 9.0 stored all files using root/root for all configuration files and recordings. This release now allows you to pass in a user ID/group ID to use when saving configuration files and recordings. This will allow you to share the recordings with other processes outside of the container in a more secure manner.

More info: Setting the ownership of your container's files

If you are upgrading your containers from v9.0 to v9.1 you should consult the upgrade guidance.

EVVR Container Documentation

  • EVVR Container documentation is now publicly available.
All documentation on EVVR Containers is now solely on the main https://support.edgevis.com/ support site.

The previously available v9.0 documentation links are no longer operational.

  • EVVR Containers use a redesigned web interface.
The local web interface has been simplified and redesigned, while being based on the same interface that v8 hardware encoders use (without the need to configure comms interfaces, as the host PC take care of this).

The screenshots in most articles will continue to reflect the v8 interface until the release of the v9.2 encoder firmware.

Introducing EdgeVis Central Licensing (and EdgeVis Server v9.1)

Version 9.1 is the next step in a roadmap of major EdgeVis releases to modernise our licensing scheme. Many customers are already licence EdgeVis on a SaaS basis, and we are now introducing the appropriate licensing system to help you monitor and control your licences:

  • Version 9.0 was a limited release that introduced EdgeVis Containers (where you can run an encoder on your own hardware) and a new SaaS licensing system to manage your licence for those containers.

  • Version 9.1 is the first public v9 release that prepares users for the wider rollout of SaaS licensing to v9 encoders. In addition to laying the groundwork for a wider rollout of SaaS licences, this release will replace EdgeVis Server v8 as the standard EdgeVis Server, and will continue to support v8 encoders (and their existing perpetual licence) - we'd made managing v8 licences even simpler!

  • Version 9.2 (Release early next year) will introduce the first v9 firmware for our new and existing hardware encoders. This firmware will be where all new features will be released - it will introduce SaaS licences to hardware encoders for the first time.

We appreciate that this is a big change - we've created an overview and upgrade article that explains how the new licensing system will work for both v8 and v9 encoders.

Note - there is no v9 hardware encoder firmware in this release!

We've deliberately planned a two-phase release to upgrade users to v9.X as a way to minimise risk:

You'll run your existing hardware encoder on its existing v8 until you're ready and licensed to upgrade!

Single Sign-on (SSO) support

Many organisations take advantage of Identity Providers to provide their users with a single account that they can use to log in to the various third-party systems required to perform their job. Common examples include Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace accounts.

EdgeVis now supports the OpenID Connect standard. In theory, any Identity Provider that adheres to this standard can be used; however, we have validated (and provided instructions) for Microsoft, Google and Okta Identity Providers.

You are able to create new users and convert existing users to require that they use their SSO credentials to sign in to EdgeVis. Both the EdgeVis Server web interface and EdgeVis Client (v9.1+) support SSO.

More info: How do I configure SSO?

Ongoing product improvements

We've made a number of improvements to the components in this release:

EdgeVis Client

  • There is a new server selection interface, with auto-login for your most recently used server, and support for Single-Sign On (SSO) users.

  • EdgeVis Client now supports dark mode, applying your device’s current dark mode setting.

  • Media Manager - no longer supports the Simple Media Player utility (previously installed using the Install Player to Disk option in the Tools menu).

Fixes:

  • Various bug fixes and performance improvements.

  • Windows - users were unable to access the PTZ controls when using a 3x3 grid (or higher).

  • All platforms will now display 99+ for the notification count when the user has a large number of notifications.

  • Various bug fixes and performance improvements

EdgeVis Server

  • Now supports configuration of Single Sign-on (SSO), as well as supporting users signing in with SSO.

Fixes:

  • EdgeVis Server no longer offers Carboard Fish as an SMS provider (they no longer offer this service).

  • Various bug fixes and performance improvements

Improved EdgeVis Support Site

We have streamlined our support site based on feedback from our customers:

  • All documentation is now available on https://support.edgevis.com/
All content and articles are available without a login.

  • All software downloads are now available on https://download.edgevis.com/
This simplified site only contains our software downloads. Accessing this site requires a Digital Barriers support site account, but once logged in, it should be simpler to find your desired downloads.
