How do I allocate a licence to my encoder?

Licence allocation is different in v9, and almost entirely automatic.

Introduction

EdgeVis version licensing is handled by a central licensing system (CLS) and is mostly automatic. This article outlines the process v9 servers follow, depending on your encoder model and version, to provide your encoders a licence.

EdgeVis v9 encoders

Licences for v9 encoders and containers are taken from your licensing pool that you have set up - these are stored in the CLS.

Licence allocation is automatic and is performed when you perform one of two operations:

  • When you add a camera to your encoder

  • When you add an output stream to your encoder

It should be noted that not every operation may need to request a new licence, if the licences you already have cover the new changes.

For example:

  • When you attach your encoder to the server for the first time, it will automatically acquire a single licence of the correct type, as your encoder is now publishing its first. Then, when you add your first camera, it already has a licence and does not need to ask for another.

  • Using One-In-One-Out licences, adding four cameras will acquire four licences. You can keep adding new output streams with no additional licence requests required, until you add the fifth - this would automatically acquire a new fifth licence.

  • Using Four-In-One-Out licences will automatically acquire a new licence when adding cameras when you add the 5th, 9th, 13th camera.

Visit the Licence tab on your encoder to see what type of licence, and how many are in use:

The same process happens in reverse when you remove cameras and output streams. If you drop to a level where your encoder has a 'spare licence' that is not being used, it will return it to your licensing pool.

EdgeVis v8 hardware encoders

Devices running older firmware are automatically granted an EdgeVis Legacy licence.

This is a perpetual licence that unlocks:

  • all capabilities of your device

  • to the maximum number of cameras that it supports

  • with all built-in analytics

You do not need to visit the encoder's configuration page on EdgeVis Server to allocate the licence anymore; this is handled all for you automatically the first time the encoder connects to a v9 server. Any previous licence(s) allocated (on a v8 server) will automatically be overwritten with the new Legacy licence.

Only running v8 hardware encoders?

You don't have to connect your server to CLS, as EdgeVis Server can independently issue EdgeVis Legacy licences.

EdgeVis v8 mobile encoders

This behaves exactly the same as hardware encoders, with one important difference.

By default, EdgeVis Server will not grant an EdgeVis Legacy licence to a mobile encoder until:

Once complete the process is exactly the same as v8 hardware encoders and you will automatically be granted a Legacy licence, with full access to all features.
