Upgrading encoder firmware

There are two ways to update the firmware - locally using a USB Pen, or remotely using EdgeVis Server.

Upgrading remotely

To update the firmware of your encoder remotely follow these instructions.

  • Using the EdgeVis server web interface logged in as a Server-wide Administrator account:

    • Upload the new firmware to the Encoder firmware page (located at the bottom of the server homepage)

    • From the encoder's configuration page, select the Firmware option followed by Upgrade firmware

    • Select the new firmware from the list and then click Confirm

    • The firmware will now update and the encoder will re-boot once complete

Upgrading locally

Depending on the enocder type will detemrine how the encoder is updated

IP Series V5, V6

To update locally, copy the update onto a USB flash drive and insert into a USB port on the front of the unit. To complete the installation:

  • Connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard to the encoder.

  • From the onscreen menu, click Upgrade Firmware

  • Enter the password and click Yes when prompted

  • Select the upgrade file

  • To complete the update process, click OK when prompted to restart the IP device and wait for the restart to conclude.

IP Series V7, V8

To complete the installation:

  • Insert the USB Pen Drive (supplied to you with the Encoder) into an empty USB socket on your computer

  • Delete any existing files from the USB Pen Drive.

  • Copy the .firmware file you downloaded onto the root of your USB Pen Drive.

  • Using the eject icon on your taskbar safely eject the USB Pen Drive - click the icon once and select your Pen Drive from the list
(Failure to perform this step can corrupt the firmware file).

  • Insert the USB Pen Drive into the Encoder (and power the Encoder if you haven't already).

  • Once the Encoder has detected the Pen Drive it will begin to upgrade the unit

  • Wait for all LEDs to come on (for IP250) or until the encoder performs 4 beeps (IP150/IP450)
For encoders that do not have LEDs/audible beeps it is recommended to use a timer to measure 20-30 seconds before unplugging the USB. Then, if successful, the encoder will reboot.

  • Eject the USB Pen from the Encoder and reset the Encoder. The Encoder should now re-power using the new firmware.

A failed attempt to update is represented by constant flashing LEDs on the IP250 or continual bleeping for an IP150/IP450.

Q, R, S, C Series

  • Once the Encoder has detected the Pen Drive (this can take up to the 15 seconds) you should observe the status lights an orange light bouncing from left to right and back again. Depending on the encoder type this can take several minutes

  • Only once all of the status lights have turned green is the update complete.

  • Eject the USB Pen from the Encoder and reset the Encoder. The Encoder should now re-power using the new firmware.

Red status light recovery procedure

If during the upgrade all the lights flash red try the following steps to resolve the issue

  • Firstly eject the Pen Drive, reset the Encoder and try the upgrade process again.

  • Insert the Pen Drive into your computer, ensure that there is no other software/configuration files on the pen then eject the Pen Drive and try again.

  • Reformat the Pen Drive in your computer, copy the firmware file on again and try again.

  • Download the firmware file again incase the firmware file is corrupt. Again copy the file to your Pen Drive and try flashing again.

  • Try using a different Pen Drive if possible.

  • Try remotely upgrading the firmware using Manager.
