How does my encoder recover from a cellular connection issue?
Updated over 6 months ago

Our encoders have a software watchdog to detect failed cellular connection states and attempt to recover.

Behaviour

The encoder attempts to connect 10 times per hour (following network provider guidelines) and eventually restarts the modem after every 10th failure.

From boot or initial configuration of modem (and where the modem does not connect) the encoder repeatedly attempts to start data sessions with an initial delay of หœ30 seconds which increases to 6 minutes. On top of this, after every 10th failure to connect we reset the modem. Approximately amounting to a reset every hour if no connection is detected.

Examples of reasons a modem may fail to connect and be detected by our watchdog are;

  1. No connection to EdgeVis server / EdgeVis server is unreachable

  2. No data plan available

  3. Weak signal

  4. Network contention

  5. No SIM card detected

  6. Invalid sim APN

The encoder does not restart, just the modem. Edge recordings remain unaffected.
